Each year 15,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with the life-altering disease, Type 1 Diabetes.
Although people can receive a diagnosis at any age, Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is sometimes known as juvenile diabetes and affects both children and adults. There is nothing anyone can do to prevent T1D; presently, there is no known cure.
The most common type of diabetes in U.S. youth, T1D is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar levels. T1D develops when the body’s immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Scientists believe the cause may have genetic and environmental components.
With a typically quick onset, managing T1D requires the use of insulin—either via injection or insulin pump. Soon, people who are insulin dependent may also be able to use artificial pancreas systems to administer their insulin automatically. While insulin therapy keeps people with T1D alive and can help keep blood glucose levels within recommended ranges, it is not a cure, nor does it prevent the possibility of T1D’s serious effects, such as stroke, blindness, amputation, and death. 1 Read more about the high cost of insulin here.
Diagnosed cases of T1D and Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) are surging among youth in the United States. From 2001 to 2017, the number of people under age 20 living with T1D increased by 45%, and the number living with T2D grew by 95%. 2
Among the US population overall, CDC estimates for 2019 were:
28.7 million people of all ages and 283,000 children and adolescents younger than age 20 years were living with a diabetes diagnosis, including 244,000 with T1D. 3
CharityRx recognizes the seriousness and the devastation that can shatter a family’s world when their child is diagnosed with diabetes. That’s why we’re partnering with the Kids with Courage Foundation for November to raise donations and awareness for Type 1 Diabetes in children.
A little charity in the Midwest, Kids with Courage, helps kids of all ages and their families whose lives are turned upside-down by a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. They are innovators who started a full-fledged movement that many larger organizations have adopted.
Kids with Courage has committed to children growing up with Type 1 Diabetes who will battle this dreadful disease every day for the rest of their lives. These kids are their inspiration because they require strength beyond what most of us can comprehend and they need and deserve understanding, assistance, and encouragement.
Their mission is to equip families to face the fear of a T1D diagnosis, impact how they approach that challenge, and view their world through the Kids with Courage Brave Box Program. Each Brave Box is overflowing with essential tools, educational materials, love, and support. Designed to empower and help families grow stronger, the information inside the Brave Box helps prepare them for their forever fight.
During November, each prescription filled with the CharityRx prescription discount card will donate to Kids with Courage to help them continue their essential work and help more children and their families to cope and survive their fight with diabetes.
