CharityRx is proud to announce our partnership with the Wounded Veteran Fund in June in honor of National PTSD Awareness Month. We commit to supporting and honoring American military veterans who have been injured or disabled while serving our country.
As we enter the summer season, we remember those who have made immense sacrifices for our freedom and safety. Through the Wounded Veteran Fund, we will donate to Wounded Warrior Project®. Wounded Warrior Project® provides critical resources and assistance to veterans, including mental and physical health and wellness, housing support, job training, and opportunities to connect and socialize. These services are crucial for helping our veterans transition back into civilian life and thrive in their communities.
When you use the CharityRx prescription discount card this month, you can save up to 80% on FDA-approved medications and make a donation to the Wounded Veteran Fund. CharityRx will donate to support veterans every time you fill a prescription using our discount card.
According to recent statistics from the Department of Veterans Affairs,[1] there are over 4 million disabled veterans in the United States. Approximately 25% of these live below the poverty line. Many of these veterans face ongoing physical and mental health challenges as a result of their service, making it difficult to maintain stable employment and support themselves.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common health diagnoses U.S. service members receive. People who serve in the military can develop PTSD from witnessing someone die or learning about the death of someone they care about. They can also develop PTSD as a result of military sexual trauma (MST). According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, MST may be one reason PTSD is higher among women veterans using VA care. PTSD is more common among female veterans (13%) versus male veterans (6%).[2]
Estimates of PTSD prevalence rates among returning service members vary widely across wars and eras. In one major study of 60,000 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, 13.5% of deployed and nondeployed veterans screened positive for PTSD. In contrast, other studies show the rate to be as high as 20% to 30%. As many as 500,000 U.S. troops who served in these wars over the past 13 years have been diagnosed with PTSD.[3]
According to John Rodolico, PhD, director of Military and Veteran Consultation at McLean, all deployed military members are affected by their experiences in some way.
“I think it would be fair to say that at least 50% of service members’ struggles are related to trauma,” Rodolico said. He added that while military members are in a heightened state while on deployment, this is not necessarily a sign of PTSD.[2]
