On Wednesday, August 25th, Elizabeth Holguin, David Espinoza’s mother, was assured by her son that he was safe. He had just recently arrived in Afghanistan and was doing what he loved: helping people. On Friday, she received the knock on her door with the news that no mother wants to hear.
Espinoza was from Rio Bravo, Texas, which is close to the border city of Laredo. He had just recently graduated from Lyndon B. Johnson High School in 2019. His family and the city have honored him through candlelight vigils, a hanging portrait, and social media posts calling him a hero. At his former high school, a moment of silence was observed while “Taps” played through the intercom.
Henry Cuellar (D-TX) from the 28th congressional district, and native of Laredo, said in a statement, “Mr. Espinoza embodied the values of America: grit, dedication, service, and valor. When he joined the military after high school, he did so with the intention of protecting our nation and demonstrating his selfless acts of service […] Mr. Espinoza is a hero.” David Espinoza is survived by his brother, mother, and stepfather.
