As a company, CharityRx believes in giving back to the community and supporting causes that align with our values. Our goal is to raise awareness for the charities we feature and the work they do, as well as provide resources to help them continue their efforts. By shining a light on these organizations, we can make a positive impact on the world and create a better future for everyone.
As our Charity of the Month for June, we’re thrilled to feature Seeds for Soldiers and Operation Give Hope. These organizations are about giving back to those who have given so much for our freedom. For every prescription filled using the CharityRx card in June, a donation will be made to Operation Give Hope. Using those donations, we will send deployed military members care packages, letters, and cards. We believe this cause is particularly important right now, given the many sacrifices our military members make to keep our country safe. Not only will this month’s charity support our military members, but it also helps people receive discounts on their prescription drugs. It’s a win-win situation!
Seeds for Soldiers was founded by Southern Utah mom Burgundy Blomquist, whose son was deployed in the Middle East with the National Guard. He told her that many men and women he served with were not receiving any support from home, and that really pulled on their family’s heartstrings.
Burgundy’s youngest son’s birthday was coming up, and he asked his friends to donate items to make care packages for the soldiers instead of birthday gifts. They made homemade cards and put together care packages. Soon afterward, he received thank-you letters from the soldiers who received the packages. Their letters said that was the only package they had received, and it meant so much. The soldiers’ letters got them thinking about how they could continue doing something to help. That’s how they came up with Seeds for Soldiers.
Burgundy and her family found that service men and women like receiving sunflower seeds because they are easy to store and carry, have a long shelf-life, and eating the seeds helps keep them awake. It was also a great option because it’s something their family can afford to purchase and send. A homemade card is attached to each package of seeds before they are sent to military bases worldwide.
Seeds for Soldiers started fundraising as the word got out, and they couldn’t keep up with requests. They have had requests to send care packages to up to 900 soldiers at a time. To raise funds, they have sold t-shirts and hosted an annual dodgeball tournament. The local grocery store, Mike’s Foodtown, and convenience store, Eagle’s Landing, have allowed Seeds for Soldiers to set up tables where people can donate money or buy seeds to donate.
Many people in the community have stepped up to help the Blomquist family make this happen. Burgundy has been asked to speak at local schools to help spread the word, and Miss Beaver County used Seeds for Soldiers as her platform in the Miss Utah pageant.
